After a lifetime of short stories, journal entries, articles, columns and scathing letters to the editor, I finally managed to write my first novel. The experience was not what I expected. It was sometimes joyful, sometimes painful. It took me places I hadn't intended to go. I'm proud of the finished result, and I can't wait to share it with others.
A Psychological Sci-Fi Journey Through a Broken Man's Mind
From the moment he watched his best friend being torn apart by wolves on a north Georgia mountain, and heard the reasons why explained to him by a talking deer, Van Ryan knew the self-delusionary miasma of his post-Marine Corps existence was at an end.
Will is dead, and Marine Corps veteran Van Ryan is at the mercy of the ancient alien entity who killed him. In a quiet meadow in the north Georgia mountains, standing over the body of his best friend, Van is given an ultimatum: perform a task for the entity, or witness more people die. Van is sent on a journey across the American south, from Georgia to Arkansas, to deliver a message to another of the alien’s kind. Along the way, he is hounded by the alien’s minions, as well as a dark past which refuses to let him go. Fortunately for Van, he finds help from a gregarious jazz man, a horse, and an intrepid lesbian artist as he travels to a town known in the media as “The Most Racist City in America.” Van must make his way, determining what is real and what exists in the dreamworld of his broken psyche, toward a final, violent showdown and the possibility of redemption.
